Dune grass planting: Ottawa County Parks is looking for
volunteers at Mt. Pisgah from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to plant dune grass
seedlings in open sand areas to help stabilize the sand and to prevent
erosion. Meet in the Black Lake Boardwalk parking lot located in Park
Township near the Coast Guard Station. The entrance is on Black Lake
Avenue off Ottawa Beach Road. This work is somewhat strenuous due to
walking up and down the dune. Organized groups, adults and older children
are encouraged to participate. Workdays are held rain or shine. Advanced
registration is not required. Bring gloves. Tools, water and snacks will

Paddle trip: The Macatawa Greenway Partnership is
hosting a paddle triple that will leave from Windmill Island from 9 a.m.
Donations will be accepted. Canoes and double kayaks are available for
run. Call (616) 396-2353 for more information.
Oct. 5
Nature scavenger hunt: Ottawa County Park is hosting a scavenger
hunt at Kirk Park in Grand Haven Township at 1 p.m. Participants will be
provided with a park map and a scavenger hunt list before heading out on
the trails to find a variety of items. A bag is not needed, however,
because this scavenger hunt relies on your observations and does not
include actual collecting of items. Children 12 and younger that finish
the scavenger hunt will receive a prize. All children must be accompanied
by an adult during the activity.
Oct. 8
Bird walk: A 9 a.m. walk at the Rosy Mound Natural Area located
in Grand Haven Township will follow bird migration. It will last for two
hours. There are no fees and advanced registration is not required. Bring
binoculars (some loaners available) and meet in the parking lot at each
park.

Bird walk: Study waterbird migration from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at
sites to be determined. Call (616) 738-4810 to register.
Oct. 12
Fall hike: A 1 p.m. hike about fall foliage will be held at the
Crockery Creek Natural Area in Crockery Township.
Oct. 15
Fall birding trip: A half-day trip to Grand Haven Pier beginning
at 8 a.m. will provide excellent places to view migrating waterbirds such
as loons, grebes and ducks. There are no fees for these trips, however,
advanced registration is required by calling (616) 738-4810.
Oct. 20
Fall hike: A 10 a.m. hike about fall foliage will be held at the
Rosy Mound Natural Area in Grand Haven Township. The hiking is somewhat
strenuous at Rosy Mound due to stairs up and down the dunes)

Fall botany: Join a 10 a.m. hike at Grand River Park in
Georgetown Township that will focus on the diversity of seeds, buds and
plant skeletons found in a variety of different natural areas along the
trails. These plant characteristics provide clues to plant identification
and also function in winter plant survival. Magnifiers, which will be
provided, will give closeups of the plants.
Dec. 3
Bird walk: Look for birds who don’t mind braving the cold and
wind from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at sites to be determined. Call (616) 738-4810
